With the Syrian refugee crisis, issues of human rights and tolerance are once again at the forefront of international politics. This situation has led to numerous calls for tolerance, yet these calls are being matched by an escalation in xenophobia. In employing the work of Giorgio Agamben (and others) this project will examine the relationship between tolerance and xenophobia that seems to result in their spiralling escalation. Through Agamben’s exploration of the cognitive architecture that informs them, this project concludes that the invocation of tolerance leads to xenophobia
