Shadows of Light is a picture novella, an experimental form that combines the written narrative of a novella with picture passages inspired by wordless novels. The story follows the character of Mae who returns to her childhood home and reflects on past events concerning her eccentric artist mother, Joan. Three sets of memories entwine to form a story that focuses on three generations of women and the relationships between love and hate, creativity and logic, and the visual and the verbal.
