Born Weiser is a work of historical fiction inspired by my maternal grandmother Charlotte and her journey with her family from Czechoslovakia to Canada during World War II. The novella begins in the late 1930s in Europe when anti-Semitism was growing in prevalence, and covers the family’s escape from Europe and from Nazi persecution. The story extends well past the years of the war and into Charlotte’s adult life, outlining her decision to hide her Judaism and how the effects of the war infiltrated her personal life and the lives of her family members for years afterwards.
