Dogs at the Gate is a five-part novella following the progression of a smallpox epidemic in modern-day Quebec City, through the eyes of university student Lise Lavoie. Over the course of the novella, Lise, an introverted girl with paranoid schizophrenia, is forced into a position of responsibility when the epidemic takes its toll. As she begins to care for her three neighbours—Mathias, a paramedic broken down by the ravages of the disease; Lango, Lise’s only friend, who lives with AIDS; and Elva, an elderly woman dying of cancer—Lise develops a resiliency and strength, despite being haunted by her own illness and the mounting paranoia of a suffering community.
