This thesis analyzes three airborne operations in World War II: Operation Merkur - the German invasion of Crete in 1941, Operation Overlord - the Allied invasion of Normandy in 1944, and Operation Market-Garden – the Allied Airborne landings in Holland in 1944. It argues that the success of these operations depended on near flawless execution of tasks. If one element of these airborne operations failed, the entire operation was in jeopardy. This thesis also discusses some of the factors that influence the outcome of these operations, such as surprise, landing accuracy, casualties, and weather.
