Abstract

OBJECTIVE: To determine if a media intervention education program increased students’ helping behaviours towards those who engaged in risky drinking. PARTICIPANTS: Students were surveyed and interviewed between March 2012 and September 2013. METHODS: Helping behaviours determined to be effective at preventing negative consequences associated with drinking formed the basis of “The 3 R’s” media slogan (Remain, Revive, Replenish). A video demonstrating the “3 R’s” was posted through Facebook, Twitter, and email. Students were surveyed and interviewed to understand the impact. RESULTS: Initial awareness of the video was high but decreased over time along with memory of what the R’s represented. No differences between helping behaviors were found between students who were aware or unaware of the video. Twitter and Facebook were expressed as the most effective forms of media reach. CONCLUSIONS: This research shows the potential for repeated messaging over Facebook and Twitter to effectively reach students.
