This thesis stemmed from a personal interest in high-risk alcohol use and related harms. I begin this thesis with a general historical exploration of alcohol use on college and university campuses where patterns and cultures of alcohol use are identified. I then, move towards a more specific exploration of drinking culture at Acadia University. Through collaboration with Acadia University National College Health Improvement Project team and my own qualitative research a comprehensive picture of the drinking culture at Acadia University is portrayed. Through the specific example of Acadia University I identified a model of harm reduction and mitigation by way of edgework theory and population health. Edgework theory and population health provide a holistic approach to a complicated issue. This model can be applied to many post-secondary institutions and the concluding guidelines to support a campus alcohol strategy are tools to assist in the implementation.
