Abstract

The current study investigated whether adult attachment styles predict the phenomenological characteristics of relationship memories, and whether these characteristics in turn predict well-being. In addition, the current study investigated the potential moderating effect of adult attachment styles on the association between memory phenomenology and well-being. Participants, in a relationship at the time of the study, completed an online survey asking them to recall and rate a positive and negative relationship memory, and to rate their state psychological and relational well-being following each recall. The present findings suggest that, while attachment styles may not predict memory intensity directly, they can significantly moderate the association between memory characteristics and well-being. Further research is required to gain a complete understanding of these issues.
