In New Brunswick, forest harvesting practices may be putting at risk the viability of many older forest dependent species. Aspects of resource use by two species dependent on older-growth forest characteristics were examined using two unconventional methods. The American marten's (Martes americana) response to habitat characteristics was examined through fractal analyses of track patterns. Marten travel was more direct at the 1 to 4.5 m scale than at the 4.5 to 50 m scale (P $<$ 0.05), indicating different responses to their environment at these two scales. Multiple regressions identified canopy closure and presence of conifer in the understory as variables which influence movement patterns (P $\le$ 0.10). The potential effects of different forestry practices on northern flying squirrel (Glaucomys sabrinus) movements were examined through homing experiments. Homing success rates were not significantly different among the continuous forest, open canopy plantation, select cut and natural regeneration scenarios (P = 0.176). Homing times for the open canopy plantation scenario were greater than those for continuous forests and select cuts (P = 0.002). A canopy cover and an assortment of age classes may be important considerations when managing for marten habitat. Although open canopy plantations may affect northern flying squirrel movements, homing is possible when forested areas surround these stands.
