The forty poems contained in IL-BENNEJ U IL-BAĦĦAR: THE MASON AND THE MARINER build an experimental Maltese-Canadian presence in Canadian literature by recounting my family’s history on the Mediterranean island nation of Malta, and their immigration experience to Canada in the 1960s. The collection is presented in four sections titled Kingdom, Quarry, Crumble, and Coast, each containing ten poems. The bilingual titles and content reflect the socio-political tensions that exist on the island today and in the past between the languages of Malti and English. The poems integrate ancestral anecdotes and religious myth, personal memory and language influenced by geological research to reflect the process of an archaeological dig.
