A thin client is a client computer or a software application in a client-server architecture model that has little or no application logic. The primary processing activities are carried out by the central processing server. In a thin client application, the client connects to the server and sends a request. The server performs the necessary processing, and returns the result to the client. There have been many client server groupware applications designed for desktop computers as well as some rich client applications for wireless handhelds with superior processing power. Conversely, there have been very few groupware applications for wireless handhelds with limited processing power. The objective of the work described in this thesis was to research thin client technologies and develop a thin client for the CVW (Collaborative Virtual Workspace) groupware application for smart phones with limited processing power, such as the BlackBerry. This thesis describes the challenges and solutions in the development, design, and implementation of a browser-based thin client called mCVW (Mobile Collaborative Virtual Workspace) and proposes possible future extensions of the application.
