Abstract

This explores ways in which spiritual formation curriculum is enhanced by the incorporation of historical and cultural material specific to the learner. To develop a framework that incorporates these elements, the use of ritual in Christian faith as developed by Roy Oswald, the cultural development theory of Lev Vygotsky and the pedagogical approach of Thomas Groome have been explicated. This exploration was undertaken specifically for use within the African United Baptist Association– the predominant faith community of African Nova Scotians. This unique community’s rich heritage of strong faith is an integral part aspect of the research.
