Abstract

Patterns of movement and orientation of fall migrants in southwest Nova Scotia were assessed at a meso scale (6-25 km) across multiple sites. Migration did not proceed across a broad front but, rather, depended on local features of the site or more distant factors that concentrated birds in the region in such a way that counts of targets and measures of orientation varied across the locations. To investigate the potential of radar cross section (RCS) calculated from a scanning radar to differentiate among target types, field observations and biological phenology were used to a priori classify a set of dates from Ostrander Point, Ontario as having predominant bird, insect, or bat targets. Peak RCS appears to be a useful method for differentiating small insects from birds, and should be used in conjunction with airspeed.
