The present study explored the relations among self- determination, self- regulation, and psychological well- being. Undergraduate university students listed their most important intrinsic goals as well as their most important intrinsic goal for the academic term. Additionally, students completed measures of self- determination, self- regulation, and psychological well- being. Several kinds of self- determination variables and self- regulatory self- reinforcement variables were associated with autonomous regulation and controlled regulation. The effect of autonomous regulation on psychological well- being appeared to be partially mediated by perceptions of freedom and goal progress on specific intrinsic goals. Results also showed that the effect of controlled regulation on psychological well- being was mediated by a low degree of perceptions of freedom. Results are discussed in terms of how theories of self- determination and self- regulation might be integrated in their explanations of the behavioural antecedents of psychological well- being. Implications for treatment and suggestions for future research are also discussed.
