In a four-step process, this project will use a biopolitical framework to argue a joint exploration and contextualization of the project of governmentality and the possibility for resistant agency. In light of the impact of the Arab Uprisings in shaping the political landscape of the MENA zone and beyond, the case study of the 2011 Arab Uprisings in the context of Egypt will be employed to ground the theoretical project of exploring the capabilities and restraints of governmentality and resistant agency. An examination of the biopolitical concept of governmentality, followed by an exploration of non-state governmentality rationalities and their function on externalized populations, will be undertaken. Finally, these moves and assertions will be contextualized in the context of the 2011 Egyptian Uprisings. The two arguments reached in this project are 1) that a governmentality framework proves a more comprehensive alternative to thinking about the political than a sovereign model, and 2) potential for transformative, resistant agency lies in collective action.
